Nietzsche on Individuality
|
Daybreak 9 Morality is nothing other than obedience to customs. Customs are the traditional way of behaving and evaluating. If there is no tradition there is no morality. The less life is determined by tradition the smaller the circle of morality. The free human being is immoral because he is determined to depend apon himself and not upon a tradition. Individual is therefore the same as evil. Who is the most moral man? Firstly he who obeys the law most frequently. Secondly, he who obeys it even in the most difficult cases. The most moral man is he who sacrifices the most to custom. The exceptions are the moralists who offer the individual a morality of self-control & temperance. Under the dominion of the morality of custom, originality of every kind has acquired a bad conscience. |
